What's the news right now about an environmentally sound,
socially responsible and economically viable beef value chain?

Happy New Year! We wish you all the best in 2023, and look forward to a year in which GRSB and our members can demonstrate progress towards Nature Positive production, reducing our climate impact and improving animal welfare around the globe!

We are looking forward to what promises to be a busy year. Many of the themes that have become familiar over the past several, and have been in some ways cemented by the pandemic, will continue to play a significant role for us.

We will be adding some activities that we would have liked to have done before, but simply lacked the bandwidth to cover. In this regard, both the climate COP (28), which we were at in 2022 and the biodiversity COP (16), which GRSB has not participated in up to now, will be significant events in our calendar.

Much more imminent however, is our Innovation Tour in Colombia, set to take place in Cartagena in the week of 26th March. Cartagena is in the Caribbean coast region of Colombia, and is a very historic city founded by the Spanish in 1533, but settled by indigenous people since as long ago as 4000 BC.

The walled city and fortress are a UNESCO world heritage site. As well as hosting a board of directors meeting, we will have a day in Cartagena itself to discuss the link between climate positive practices and biodiversity.

Following the meetings in Cartagena, we will visit the neighbouring region of Cordoba to see how producers are innovating to ensure they can contribute positively to nature, particularly in the dry Tropical forest ecosystem in the region.

We also intend to build space in the agenda for a face to face national roundtable meeting. Hopefully, we will have good representation for the event from around the world, though we realise that coming as soon as it does after the Global Conference on Sustainable beef, not everyone will be able to attend.

As I write, we are preparing a series of meetings between national roundtables and our working group leaders to align ourselves and our activities towards the goals for the year. All GRSB members will have a chance to give their input to the resulting plans.

We expect this process to result in some projects directly related to each of the working group themes, and will be looking for active participation in those projects both in implementation but also sponsorship. Expect to hear more about that in the near future!

Thank you,

Ruardaidh Petre
Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef
Executive Director
11 January 2023

Hello and Happy New Year to everyone! I am writing from the heat of Buenos Aires, a summer of high temperatures and very little rain.

In Latin America a very good year closed, with new members and a lot of interest from different countries and regions to form new roundtables. It continues to be a challenge to add member organizations to the Global RoundTable and to add them to the global discussions of beef sustainability through our different working groups where priorities are discussed.

There's still a preference to continue in local discussions. The Latin RoundTables will work during the year 2023 in the construction of the narrative and data on the importance of livestock in the region for society and its impacts.

On the other hand, the members and National Roundtables met to provide input to the GRSB 2023 Plan and 2030 Strategy. It was a very good opportunity to continue strengthening links between different actors in the chain and to be part of the global strategy, but with a local imprint.

A year of a lot of work is coming up and especially these next few months to plan the Innovation Tour in Colombia.

Thank you,

Josefina Eisele
Regional Director South America

The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef announces 2023 Executive Committee

5th January 2023 The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) today announces its 2023 Executive Committee.

The newly elected committee is comprised of beef producers, beef supply chain stakeholders and beef industry groups from across the world. There is representation from Brazil, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, and the United States. These leaders will collaborate on the organization's work towards reducing the global warming impact of beef by 30 percent by 2030.

The seven-member 2023 Executive Committee includes industry leaders from the likes of McDonalds, Tri-L Ranch, Tyson Foods, and Zoetis.

President: Mr. Ian McConnel, Tyson Foods

Vice President: Mr. Bob Lowe, Tri-L Ranch

Secretary-Treasurer: Mr. Justin Sherrard, Rabobank

Member at large: Ms. Jeannette Ferran Astorga, Zoetis

Member at large: Mr. Lucas McKelvie, McDonalds Corporation

Member at large: Ms. Luiza Bruscato, Brazilian Roundtable on Sustainable Livestock

Immediate Past-President: Mr. Bob McCan, McFaddin Enterprises

Since 2012, GRSB has been working to advance sustainable beef through leadership, science, and multi-stakeholder engagement. Leaders are elected from a membership that represents the full value chain, including beef producers and producer organizations, allied services and industries, processors, retail, civil societies, and others who aim to continuously improve beef sustainability around the world.

In the last year, GRSB has grown its membership to over 100 members with new partners including Datamars, Acceligen and Woolworths. In November, the organization hosted its global conference in Denver – a four-day event that brought together a global network of likeminded individuals with an interest in powering a future of beef sustainability. This year’s COP27 saw several members of GRSB’s leadership team join panels to discuss how GRSB and its members aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the beef supply chain.

More than 500 companies and producer organizations are engaged in the work of GRSB and its members, including regionally focused beef sustainability roundtables and initiatives in Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, Paraguay, Southern Africa, the United States, and other countries around the world.

The new committee came into effect on January 1st, 2023. For more information about GRSB visit https://grsbeef.org
