What's in the news right now about an environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable beef value chain?

Executive Director's Message:

I would like to begin by welcoming the Mexican Roundtable for Sustainable Livestock (MRGSM), officially launched last week with Homero García de la Llata, secretary of the National Confederation of Livestock Organizations (CNOG), as its president.

In addition to aligning with GRSB, the roundtable will play a key role in the CNOG's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the sector, which in turn contributes to our GRSB climate goal. Thanks to Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA) Leticia Deschamps, Caterine Forero and Eduardo Rendon(WWF México,) as well as AMEG and CNOG for all of the hard work to get to this point!

Over the past few weeks, both Josefina Eisele and I have been invited to speak at a number of meetings. The Textile Exchange Conference took place in Dublin, and while neither of us was able to be there in person, we were both able to present to those attending, particularly to those involved in the Responsible Leather Roundtable.

Josefina, who also works part time for Textile Exchange on their field program to bring impact incentives to the market, presented on the progress so far. Included was the announcement at the conference that the first leather impact incentives have been sold to Ralph Lauren and H&M from a project in Brazil with Produzindo Certo.

I also presented on metrics for methane, with an emphasis on GWP*.

Last week, Josefina was able to make the journey to Colombia, her first trip out of Argentina for many months, where she gave a keynote presentation to Expo Agrofuturo in Medellín on GRSB.

The expo had a full day dedicated to Sustainable Livestock in Latin America, with very interesting presentations from some of our global and local members such as Minerva Foods, The Nature Conservancy, CREA, FEDEGAN and Angus Azul, which shows the importance of sustainability in Colombia and the regional agenda.

We hope that this can provide the impetus to bring the Colombian livestock sustainability initiatives together as the roundtable representation once again. Meanwhile, though I was not able to travel there, I was delighted to be able to give an online presentation to the Global ODA forum on Sustainable Agricultural Development hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea on the Sustainable Livestock Coalition that we helped build out of the UN Food Systems Summit.

We are looking forward to our December webinar on managing methane. We will be hearing from Dr Ermias Kebreab from UC Davis in California, a leading researcher into methane reductions, as well those on the commercial side of new technologies to reduce enteric emissions and / capture biogas. Ian McConnel will moderate the session for us. With his in-depth knowledge of the entire chain, he will be able to answer your questions, so please, don't miss it!

We hope you were able to participate in the 2021 GRSB General Assembly meeting that took place on November 17th. However, if you were unable to join the meeting, a video recording is available at 11-17-2021 GRSB General Assembly Meeting. (Please use the password: grsbeef2021 to view the recording.)

Thanks,
