Ganadería sostenible: el vínculo entre el secuestro de carbono y la biodiversidad

Colombia es un país tropical donde no existen estaciones, que ofrece una diversidad de paisajes dónde la ganadería está presente, una actividad destacada para la economía del país que aporta más del 1,4% del Producto Interno Bruto. El país está ubicado en el extremo noroccidental de Suramérica siendo el único país del subcontinente que posee costas sobre los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico -cerca de 2.900 kilómetros de costa- con una superficie terrestre de 1'141.748 km2 y de 928.660 km2 de dominios marítimos, y que alberga una población cercana a los 50 millones de habitantes y el 10% de la biodiversidad mundial.
La ganadería bovina y bufalina, con un inventario cercano a los 30 millones de cabezas, se ubica en el puesto 11 del inventario ganadero mundial, destacándose la región Caribe, al norte de Colombia, como una de las actividades relevantes para su desarrollo socio económico junto a la agricultura, minería, industria, turismo y transporte marítimo.
Bajo este contexto se desarrollará una interesante agenda durante la semana del 27 al 31 de marzo próximo: 1) discutir y analizar el plan de acción que permita consolidar el trabajo de esta red colaborativa institucional y avanzar hacia el cumplimiento de las metas fijadas bajo el direccionamiento de la Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef – GRSB, a través de las Mesas Redondas Nacionales de Ganadería Sostenibles de los distintos países, para transformar la ganadería de carne y su cadena de valor hacia la sostenibilidad; 2) abordar en un simposio abierto, para conocer el vínculo existente entre el carbono y la biodiversidad y los compromisos establecidos por la cumbre de Río de Janeiro y su ratificación; y finalmente 3) realizaremos un recorrido fantástico bordeando el litoral caribeño para conocer los paisajes ganaderos propios del ecosistema Bosque Seco Tropical evidenciando los avances, las dificultades y los retos de los sistemas de producción ganadera para lograr su transformación hacia su sostenibilidad en pro del bienestar de los ganaderos y las comunidades rurales, bajo un enfoque territorial.

Colombia is a tropical country where there are no seasons, which offers a diversity of landscapes where livestock is present, an outstanding activity for the country's economy that contributes more than 1.4% of the Gross Domestic Product. The country is located in the extreme northwest of South America, being the only country in the subcontinent that has coasts on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans -nearly 2,900 kilometers of coastline- with a land area of 1,141,748 km2 and 928,660 km2 of maritime domains, and which houses a population close to 50 million inhabitants and 10% of the world's biodiversity.
Bovine and buffalo livestock, with an inventory of close to 30 million heads, ranks 11th in the world livestock inventory, with the Caribbean region, north of Colombia, standing out as one of the relevant activities for its socio-economic development together with to agriculture, mining, industry, tourism, and maritime transport.
In this context, an interesting agenda will be developed during the week of March 27 to 31:
1) discuss and analyze the action plan that allows consolidating the work of this institutional collaborative network and moving towards the fulfillment of the goals set under the direction of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef - GRSB, through the National Round Tables for Sustainable Livestock of the different countries, to transform beef farming and its value chain towards sustainability;
2) address in an open symposium, to learn about the link between carbon and biodiversity and the commitments established by the Rio de Janeiro summit and its ratification; and finally
3) we will take a fantastic tour bordering the Caribbean coast to learn about the livestock landscapes typical of the Tropical Dry Forest ecosystem, evidencing the advances, difficulties and challenges of livestock production systems to achieve their transformation towards sustainability for the well-being of farmers and rural communities, under a territorial approach.
